Did Lincoln "leave office"? Wasn't there an incident at Ford's Theater that made it a bit difficult for Abe to continue his presidency? He had been re-elected shortly before the assassination.

i'd say though, that not only does it represent the typical american's understanding of history, it also represents the typical apathy americans have for history itself and the lessons learned from it. the president trashed the economy and the reputation of the US, permanently and no one is going to do anything about it.
yup, sad but true MJ. ignorance seems to be the prevailing trait these days. the damage bush has caused is going to take decades perhaps generations to fix.
